Dear Falcon Families,
You are receiving this message because your child played with the Peewee or Atom Falcons in the fall of 2017, or you have already registered your child to play with one of these teams in the fall of 2018. We wanted to make you aware of some recent changes which may impact where you register and play football in 2018.
In 2017 the Calgary Bantam Football Association (CBFA 13-15 year old players) changed the manner in which they wanted to form the Bantam Falcons football team. Ultimately, they chose to remove control of the Bantam Falcons team from the Calgary Falcons Football Association, and attempted to run the team separately. Due to insufficient support and experience with team organization, coaching and player registration, the CBFA folded the team in late August. The last information we received from the CBFA was that there would be 2 Bantam teams in southwest Calgary in 2018, the Wildcats and the Bulldogs. The CBFA website lists all of the Bantam teams and shows their boundary on a map, and it does not include any team named Falcons.
Recently the Calgary Spring Football Association (CSFA, formerly called Calgary Midget Football 15-18 year old players) forced a merger of the Calgary Spring Falcons team with Calgary Spring Bulldogs team. There has been no indication the CSFA is planning to reconstitute a Calgary Spring Falcons team in future years.
Our current Calgary Falcons Football Association board, consisting of President – Jill Kobelak, Treasurer – Ryan Macfie, Secretary – Will Wagner, Peewee/Atom Head Coach – Mike Stewart met to discuss the feasibility of continuing to field teams at Peewee (11-12 year old players) and Atom (8-10 year old players).
It is our recommendation to NOT field teams at Peewee and Atom go forward for the following reasons:
· Each of the Calgary Football League age groups has a separate board of directors, but there is a lot of cross pollination of members between boards. Based on the reasoning and actions of the CBFA and CSFA, it appears they wish to support athletes at an elite level, with commitment to year round football skill development.
· The Calgary Falcons Football Association does not have the coaching resources or volunteer commitment to establish year round football skill development.
· Falcon families who are interested in pursuing year round football skill development, choose to attend programs run by other associations. Based on relationships they build with these programs, they request a release from registering with the Falcons so they can continue to play with their friends or compete at a higher level.
· Player registration at Atom and Peewee has been declining over the past 4 years within the Falcons Association boundaries.
We are confirming what responsibilities we have as board members to properly dissolve the Calgary Falcons Football Association. There will be further communication coming shortly. If you’ve paid online at registration, your registration payment will be fully refunded to the credit card used for payment.
It is my intention to notify the Peewee and Atom Leagues that I am resigning as head coach for the Falcons in early April. I do not know at this time if the Peewee or Atom leagues will try to find coaches to run teams based in the Falcons area, but based on past experience these coaches are usually nominated by an association and then approved by the league.
We have enjoyed your support and assistance of the Calgary Falcons over the past 15 years, and we are proud of the successful athletes we have created along the way. We wish you the best of luck in the future.
Sincerely, Coach Mike Stewart
(on behalf of the Calgary Falcons Football Association)
